At the end of the year, Judge James Hume will step down from the bench. He’s been the city’s Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Judge since 1991.  He says he’s been called to serve in the ministry.

“I began to prepare myself seriously in 2002,” Hume said. In 2006 he graduated the Virginia Union University School of Theology. He said that with his retirement he’ll be able to participate in the ministry full time.

“I’ll start contacting churches with vacant pulpits.”

He said that while pursuing his degree he’s been careful to separate his faith beliefs from his time on the bench.

“There’s been no situation that has given rise to a legal conflict,” Hume said. “Nothing’s precluded me from that. I pursued my degree on the weekends.”

But leaving the bench, Hume said it’s been an exciting time.

“I cared,” Hume said. “As I see it, that was my job, was to serve the public and I’ve enjoyed it. I always take my job very seriously.”
