MILWAUKEE, May 4, 2009 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/TodaysDrum.com — Johnson Controls has been recognized by US Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine as a 2009 Top Supporter of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).
The magazine considers Johnson Controls a premier corporation investing in future engineering talent and the institutions that educate them. It said the company is committed to supporting diversity and the development of the best technologists, scientists and engineers at HBCU and minority institutions.
“At Johnson Controls it is a business imperative to focus on the development of our future workforce by strengthening education and training opportunities in technical fields,” said Charles A. Harvey, vice president, Diversity and Public Affairs. “The cultivation of talent at all levels through diversity programs and higher education is critical to our ongoing success.”
The magazine conducts an annual survey of HBCU and minority institutions to determine its “Top Supporters.” To achieve this honor, businesses must meet several support criteria, including faculty development, scholarships, student projects, infrastructure modernization, research and career opportunities.
Johnson Controls has promoted workforce and supplier diversity through numerous global initiatives that have earned the company recognition. Johnson Controls is a member of the Billion Dollar Roundtable as one of just 15 corporations worldwide that spend more than $1 billion annually with women and minority-owned suppliers. Johnson Controls received the National Minority Supplier Development Council’s 2008 Corporation of the Year award for excellence in minority supplier development, the second time the company was so honored.
The company has supported the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) for four decades, and in 2008 contributed $80,000 in sponsorship gifts, scholarships, volunteer time, Web site fundraising and other in-kind services to UNCF to aid in the education of students nationwide.
