Second Missionary Baptist Church was founded by the Rev. T.J. Showers as The African Baptist Church in 1854 — and it was formally established the following year.
As the church prepares to celebrate its 155th anniversary next weekend, church member Josephine Morgan shared her thoughts about why the church has remained vibrant for so long. Part of the reason is practical, but much is spiritual, she said.
“Part of the reason is our location,” said Morgan, 57, of Kalamazoo. “We’re very close to the bus and train station, so a lot of people come to us for help. And no one ever is turned away — benevolence is very big here.”
