The newest classroom is encased in polycarbonate sheeting, with “micro-grow” controls, motorized roof vents, a complete irrigation system and giant exhaust fans with evaporative cooling — a professional-grade greenhouse.
Unveiled last week, the greenhouse adds to the school’s already impressive list of features — among them, a $1 million kitchen and a science lab where students can clone plants. These facilities are designed to give students hands-on experience in preparation for specific careers. And inside the new greenhouse, the focus is on readying students for careers in agriculture, something most inner-city schools leave to their country counterparts.
The predominantly black school is the only one in the St. Louis Public Schools system to become a member of FFA, the organization formerly known as Future Farmers of America, and one of a growing number of urban schools embracing modern agriculture through a newly broadened FFA.
