When a patient confronts a life-threatening injury and looks into the eyes of the skilled trauma staff at Wishard Memorial Hospital’s trauma center, changes in behavior can and do occur.
Led by a South American Latino and a black surgeon from New York, the multiracial and gender-diverse team exudes professionalism. In a field where ego is no stranger, they eschew praise for their individual roles, focusing instead on the importance of teamwork and prevention.
The trauma staff yearns for an impact beyond emergency response, and in partnership with Shepherd Community Center developed an innovative, evidence-based solution. The Prescription for Hope Program, funded as part of the city’s Community Crime Prevention Grant Program, strives to prevent violence through educating and supporting individuals and families admitted to Wishard as a result of a gunshot, stabbing or assault.
Through mentoring, counseling and other services, staff members work to provide clients with the life skills and resources needed to alter criminal involvement and the types of decision-making that lead to trauma. Many of Wishard’s trauma patients view violence as acceptable and inevitable, so Prescription for Hope works to make violence unacceptable and avoidable.
