The program encourages fathers to get involved in their children’s lives by having them volunteer to patrol the school grounds and help teachers and students during classes and lunch time.
About 20 people gathered for the first of many planned meetings for fathers, said Mary McDaniel, the school’s parent liaison who is spearheading the effort along with the Bronze Shields, an organization for African-American police officers in Newark, and the Newark Comprehensive Center for Fathers or NCCF, which is part of Newark Now, a nonprofit group founded by Mayor Cory Booker.
