Mrs. Atkinson was the last of the Links’ nine founding members: wives of Philadelphia-area professionals who gathered in 1946 to create a club to “spread warmth and friendship among women,” and promote causes important to the African American community.

Now based in Washington, the Links Inc. has 10,000 members in 275 chapters in four countries. Since its founding, it has contributed tens of millions of dollars to colleges, inner-city schools, the NAACP, the Urban League, and other programs.
