During the program, the students were given medals. They also received a pep talk from Jackson native William Godwin, someone The Links also helped when he was a student at Jackson Central-Merry High School.

Godwin, now a law student at the University of Chicago, told the students everyone has fears, whether they’re young or old, rich or poor. But don’t let those fears hold you back, he said.

“Turn your fears into opportunities,” Godwin said.

Failure to do so could result in a decision that’s not smart or a situation that could cause you to become content with life, he said.

Godwin said that when black students choose to excel, some are told by peers their own race that they’re “acting white.”
